There’s a lot of talk in the hockey world about what will happen to the NHL’s business model in the wake of the lockout.
Some NHL owners have said they want to sell the team’s assets but have yet to make a decision.
But there’s one team in particular that could get serious about its hockey business, and that’s the Phoenix Coyotes.
They are currently seeking a new home for their franchise, which will be moved to Arizona after this season.
They also have a big interest in the NHL.
Coyotes President and General Manager John Chayka said in December that they plan to bring a new arena to the Valley, and there have been some reports that the Coyotes are exploring a bid for a new team in the city.
In an interview with the Arizona Republic on Tuesday, Chayk said that the team has talked to the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Seattle Mariners, but he couldn’t provide more specifics.
“We’re in a unique position because we have so many different factors going into our business model,” Chayki said.
“As we look at the options, we are focused on building a successful franchise.
That means building the right infrastructure.
That’s the bottom line.
It means getting the right people, and we’re looking at a lot, a lot.”
The Coyotes’ new arena plan will not be finalized until the end of the year.
“The plan that we’re going to be going forward is one that is built around the Phoenix market, so we’re trying to take advantage of the market as much as possible, which is a big part of our business,” Chahka said.
The Coyotes are not the only team in this group.
“There are other teams that have talked to us, and they are interested in coming here,” Chayski said, “but we’re focused on trying to build a franchise here that can have success.”
That means trying to lure a top prospect or two from the Arizona desert, as well as a top draft pick.
Chaykas job will be much more difficult than it seems at first glance.
The NHL is very tight-lipped on the business side of things.
The league has said that it expects the new league to be around until 2020, but it hasn’t released a schedule.
This season, the league has already suspended two teams for violating the league’s concussion policy, and the league is set to cut players in half for the next three seasons.
But the Coyotes, who have a team-record 26 wins, are one of the teams that seem to be getting ready for a full rebuild.
Chaysk is one of those guys.
He said the Coyotes have been discussing a number of options for the team for years, and he has even suggested that the NHL should take over ownership of the team and use that as a bargaining chip to get a deal done.
“Our business model has always been about getting the most bang for the buck,” Chais said.
It’s hard to see the NHL taking over ownership when the team is still struggling financially, but Chayak said that he will look to find ways to work with the NHL on a business deal.
“I want to do everything I can to help,” Chak said.
