A hockey equipment store in Sydney’s south-west has been closed and will close on Thursday after it was sold to a family who plans to reopen a sports equipment store at the site.
The South West Sports and Entertainment Centre in the city’s inner west will reopen as the new Sports & Fitness Centre, after a lease agreement with the property’s owner expired last month.
A large number of staff will be laid off from the existing Sports & Equipment Centre, which was built in the 1960s, and will be replaced by about 1,000 people, with the majority being staff from the sports equipment business.

“The Sports &Equipment Centre is no longer able to meet the needs of our local community,” they said in a statement.
“The lease agreement between the owners of the Sports&Equipment, a small business, and the property owners has expired.
The Sports&Associates will be seeking an interim lease agreement, which will be finalised at a later date.”‘
The future is here’The South Western Sports & Entertainment Centre has been the site of a number of sporting events including the Olympic Games in 1988 and the Sydney Olympics in 1992.
In the last decade, it hosted the NRL Grand Final and AFL Grand Final.
In 2013, it became the venue for the inaugural World Cup finals, with a crowd of some 100,000 filling the stadium.
Owner and sportsman Mark McLean said the new facility would be “a place of great excitement for everyone”.
“Our customers will enjoy the facilities and the lifestyle, and we will be open every day of the week, and there will be no closures in the morning or night,” he said.
“We want the South West to be an incredible place for all the local communities that we serve.”
