The New England Patriots coach, Bill Belichick, spoke out after the New York Jets’ quarterback hit Eric Decker during the first quarter of a Week 8 game, and the message wasn’t pretty.
“I hope the person who did that can get some help,” Belichick said, according to a report from ESPN.
“He should be very ashamed.
I hope they can help him, because he is not a player who should be in this position.”
Decker was fined $5,000 for the hit, which was assessed after the play was ruled to be intentional.
“We’re going to be looking for any type of contact that could have impacted our team’s performance,” Patriots owner Robert Kraft said after the game.
The NFL issued a suspension for Decker for the game, but it did not come without an explanation.
The league says the league has an “open process” for determining if any of the penalties were appropriate.
The Patriots have been without Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez for the last two games due to suspension, but Belichick said the team plans to continue to have Gronkowski, and Hernandez, in the lineup.
“If you don’t have him, we don’t want to play,” Belichick told reporters after the Patriots’ game.
“They’re not going to get their reps and be able to perform well.
I think it’s unfortunate for the guy, but I think he’s a great player, and he deserves to be here.”
The Patriots also released quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick.
The team has been trying to build chemistry with Fitzpatrick, who had only three completions on Sunday.
“Ryan Fitzpatrick’s a very good quarterback,” Belichick added.
“And I think Ryan has been a good quarterback this year, but he needs to take the next step.”
Fitzpatrick has started every game in his career, but hasn’t thrown a touchdown pass in a game since the Jets beat the Browns in Week 6.
“There’s a lot of things we can do better,” Belichick admitted.
“But right now, the main thing we’re focused on is getting Ryan Fitzpatrick healthy.”
Brady had a rough week with the Jets, going just 4-of-14 for 20 yards in the loss.
The Jets are 5-3 this season, and Belichick has not been pleased with the play of his quarterback.
“This is what it’s come to,” Belichick insisted after the loss to the Browns.
“It’s not the first time that I’ve had to say that.
But, you know, he’s been doing his job.
He’s been getting better and better.”
The Jets also have a bye this week, and it will be hard to see Fitzpatrick return in Week 10 against the Raiders.
